Lorenzo Marchi was born in Siena in 1950. After completing his studies in his hometown, he moved to Cremona in 1974 to attend the International School of Violin Making, graduating in 1978. He immediately began working independently, opening his own workshop in Cremona. In the same year, he was invited to teach in the school’s workshop courses. However, teaching left him little time to focus on his own work, so he gave it up after one year. He later resumed his teaching role from 1996 to 2011. His work is mainly dedicated to the construction and repair of violins, violas, and cellos, though he has also expanded his knowledge through the construction of other instruments such as baroque, transitional, and classical guitars, the viola da gamba, lute, mandolin, and hurdy-gurdy. He has received awards and recognitions in various violin making competitions. In 1980, he became a founding member of A.L.I. (Italian Violin Making Association). Within the Group of Professional Violin and Bow Makers formed under A.L.I., he served on the Executive Board, first as a board member, then as Secretary from 1996 to 1998, and finally as President from 1999 to 2001. Since 1999, he has also been a member of the Entente International des Maîtres Luthiers et Archetiers d’Art (International Union of Master Violin and Bow Makers). He currently works in Via Beltrami 8, in the historic center of Cremona, just steps from the cathedral.
