Gabriele Carletti was born on 14 Septernber 1948 in Pieve di Cento (in the Bologna province). Son and pupil of master violinmaker Natale Carletti (1904-1979), he continued the family tradition, also passed down by his grandfather Carlo (1873-1941) and uncles Orfeo (1906-1940), Nullo (1913-1978) and Genuzio (1905-1996). He completed his diploma in industrial chemistry in 1968 at the 'N Copernico" Technical Institute of Ferrara and in 1973 he took out a degree in Mathematics at the University of Bologna. Gabriele Carletti works as a professional violinmaker dedicating himself to the construction and restoration of violins violas and cellos. He is a member of the LI Association. His work follows the lines of the "romantic" Bolognese tradition (of Raffaele Piorini, Augusto Pollastri, Carlo Carletti, etc) whilst comprehending the language and logic of modern scientific studies, applied to acoustical research (mechanical and physical concepts of dampening and double crossed resonance) and construction (varnish chemistry, the potential of the internal and external forms, etc.), all fundamental elements in the construction of a string instrument. His instruments are sought after for their power quality of sound and ease of playing. He has written numerous articles for violinmaking magazines. Author of specialized puhlications including Vernici in Liuteria Ed. Zanibon, Padova 1985; La Liuteria Pievese Quaderni PievesV2, Pieve di Cento 1986 an introductory essay in Mozzani, un liutaio e la sua arte by G. Intellisano, Cento 1990; "The Bolognese workshop of Raffaele Fiorini" a chapter of the book Un secolo di liuteria italiana 1860-1960: Emilia Romagna by R Blot Ed. He has participated in important violinmaking competitions (Bagnacavallo 1976, Bagnacavallo 1980 where he received important commendations) as well as cultural exhibitions (1978

From 1993 to 1997 he acted as a consultant for the CouncilAdministration of Medicina in the evaluation of the 'Ansaldo Poggi" Workshop Museum of Medicina (Bologna province). Teacher and consultant in the school years 1993-94 and 1994-95 in applied and theoretical classes of violin varnish at the Civic School of Violinmaking in Milan. Vice president, from 1996 of the professional group of violin and bow makers of the ALI association. Since 1996 he teaches classes of classical violinmaking at the Regional Residential Center of Professional Training in Bisignano (Cosenza province).
